How to translate an Instagram Live on iPhone in real time
Instagram translates text — captions, comments, bios — and can add automatic captions to Reels, but nothing translates what someone is saying on a Live. iOS will not either. To follow a Live in another language, use an app that listens to the audio Instagram is playing: Hono Translate floats translated subtitles over the Live, on the device.
What Instagram itself does
Instagram's translations are for writing: a post's caption, the comments under it, a profile's bio. For Reels, automatic captions write down the speech, and some creators publish Reels with a translated voice track. All of that is for recorded video. Instagram has no feature that translates the speech of a Live while it is happening.
If it is a Reel rather than a Live, check its captions and audio options first — that may be enough.
Why iOS will not do it either
Live Captions writes down what is said in the language it is said in. Live Translation is for Phone, FaceTime and Messages. The generated subtitles in iOS 27 cover English speech only. The full comparison of every option has the details.
Translate an Instagram Live with Hono Translate
- Open the Live in Instagram and let it play.
- Open Hono Translate and choose the language being spoken and the language you read.
- Tap Start translating sound, confirm on the iOS sheet, then tap the empty space below the sheet.
- The subtitle window floats up on its own and the iPhone returns to the Home Screen. Go back to Instagram.
The subtitle window floats over the Live and new lines appear as people speak. Headphones are fine, because iOS hands the app the audio directly. Nothing is sent to Instagram and nothing leaves the iPhone: recognition and translation run on the device.
What to expect on a Live
- Joint Lives are harder. When two or more people talk at once, the translation comes out in fragments.
- Music under the voice costs accuracy. The quieter the background, the better it works.
- A short delay. A phrase has to be said before it can be translated.
- Comments are not translated. It translates the voice only.
- No iOS screen recording at the same time. iOS allows one broadcast session, and the app is using it. To keep a clip with the subtitles in it, use the app's own recording.
Questions
Does Instagram have captions for Lives?
Instagram's automatic captions and translations are for Reels and for text. Nothing in Instagram translates the speech of a Live, so a separate app is needed for that.
Does it work for Reels and Stories too?
Yes. It reads whatever audio the iPhone is playing, so a Reel, a Story or a Live all work the same way.
Will the person going Live know?
No. The app gets the audio from iOS on your phone. Nothing is sent to Instagram or to them.
Can an iPhone app hear the sound another app is playing? Do I need a second phone?
Yes, and one iPhone is enough. Through screen sharing — the iOS sheet you confirm when you start — iOS hands the sound that is playing to the app you pick. Hono Translate takes that audio from iOS, not from the microphone, so headphones are fine, and its subtitles float in a Picture-in-Picture window over TikTok, YouTube or any other app.
